Description

Vinyl LP pressing. Live archive release. An extraordinary vintage concert album from the outlaw females of British heavy metal, Girlschool, blowing away a packed audience at the Apollo Theater in Glasgow, Scotland! This never before released recording includes high octane performances of tracks from their Screaming Blue Murder and Hit & Run albums! These captivating performances led to the ladies'' first US tour later in 1982 opening for Iron Maiden and Scorpions. Girlschool formed in the new wave of British heavy metal scene in 1978 and frequently associated with contemporaries Motörhead. They are the longest running all-female rock band, still active after more than 35 years. Formed from a school band called Painted Lady, Girlschool enjoyed strong media exposure and commercial success in the UK in the early 1980s with three albums of ''punk-tinged metal'' and a few singles.

But this live album convinces me that Girlschool is a special band that has to be considered in the top class of live hard rock acts. Try listening to this without smiling and thrashing your head. Very consistent quality of kick ass rock, and performed with authenticity. (Sometimes in short supply)

Recorded live on the band''s ''Screaming Blue Murder'' European tour. Show took place on June 5, 1982 at the Apollo Theatre in Glasgow, Scotland. Every bit as good as it''s companion Girlschool release ''London 1980'' (see my review). Tracks - that I couldn''t get enough of were the [absolutely] rocking "Kick It Down", "You Got Me", their superbly-played cover of Gun''s "Race With The Devil" (I miss the days where our local FM album rock station played this tune in regular rotation), the ass-kicking "Nothing To Lose", "Future Flash" their well-received Stones cover "Live With Me" and "Take It All Away". for you true collectors, also available in limited edition purple vinyl lp. A nice find.

A fairly-priced US import, recorded at the legendary Glasgow Apollo, this is an excellent recording from the massive archives of Scotland''s Radio Clyde. Radio Clyde have long licenced their recordings, eventually setting up a record company, River Records, to release them. I bought Nazareth and Gillan releases of recordings from the archive, and was hopeful of this Girlschool show being released, but it never appeared. The fact this is a Radio Clyde recording is not mentioned anywhere on the packaging, suggesting it is a ''grey'', semi-official release. Gil Weston is correctly named as bassist on the insert, but the 2 group photos both show Enid Williams, further adding to the bootleg feel. The music? 42 minutes of superbly recorded Girlschool, showing that they were a terrific live act - that much has never changed. As far as I know this is the full broadcast* - I certainly have never encountered more of this, and I have had it from several sources over the past 20 years or so, in varying quality. This is a definite upgrade to the best of those - the sound quality can not be faulted. I have a photo of a ticket stub that shows this show was originally scheduled for Friday May 7th, but that is crossed out and date-stamped ''31 May 1982''. That date stamp is itself crossed out, and I have long seen a date of June 5th against this broadcast, and that is what Cleopatra Records have assigned to this. * Actually, no - we''re missing ''Turn Your Head Around'', which was between ''Hit and Run'' and ''Future Flash''. Kim does introduce it, and I assumed the radio had made the edit, but I have found an old tape with it on, as did Mr Blackwell. If Radio Clyde had allowed official access to its archive, I''m sure that we would have had the full broadcast.

Here we go folks hold onto everything and strap yourself in for the ride of your life. These ladies do not do slow as they through you around the room with their energy and belt you in the face. When it comes to hardcore rock, well these girls are right up there with the best bands. This is a brilliant recording not only for Girlschools energy but also the sound quality is excellent. My only criticism would be the length of time as it comes in at around 42 minutes.

excellent release, not quite a straight copy of Radio Clyde''s radio broadcast, i cant quite retire the tape now,i was actually at this gig, their 2nd headline gig at the legendary Glasgow Apollo,3rd time i''d seen them and they never failed to deliver, this release captures their intensity live, perfectly, Sound quality is very good dspie the recording being 30 + years old. The girls power thru tracks from their ist 3 discs,,superb renditions of ''Screamin Blue Murder'',''Hit and Run'',''Nuthin To Lose'' etc, classic after classic, its hard to believe it all went pear shaped not long after. This is an excellent reminder of just how good Girlschool were, ''Kelly Johnson'' in particular,it s nostalgic look back at what might have been. Here''s hoping this label can get permission? to release similliar broadcasts for KISS/QUO/SAXON/MANOWAR/RORY GALLACHER/HAWKWIND etc that were made. Edit, looked out my old cassette, the original broadcast included ''Turn Your Head Around '' which is missed off this release.

A classic gig from 1982, from the Glasgow Apollo, I think. The band is on top form playing all the hits and a couple of new ones,at the time. Well worth it if you are a fan of the band
